Our in-house Doctor and fully qualified Nutritional Therapist, Dr Venita Patel, provides support and consultations for those trying to conceive, as well as offering prenatal and postnatal nutritional guidance for mothers and babies. Dr Patel is an experienced medical doctor and has worked in the NHS, as well as running her own ‘Health Via Nutrition’ clinics for the past few years.
Fertility and pre-conception nutrition
If you are thinking of trying for a baby, or you have already tried but not yet succeeded, Dr Patel is able to support your fertility and overall health by formulating a personalised nutrition plan for you with some manageable lifestyle adjustments. The plan would include dietary guides and specific supplements recommendations, tailored to your preferences and needs. You will be guided in all the ways to improve your prospect of achieving a healthy pregnancy and baby. Nutrition plays such an important role in fertility, with key nutrients known to help create and maintain both the quality of the egg and the sperm. Lifestyle factors, such as stress, sleep and physical activity are also known to influence fertility. There is growing research that it takes around 3 months of making changes to your diet and lifestyle, for both you and your partner, to really optimise your chances of conceiving.
There are also some underlying health issues such as endometriosis and PCOS that may affect fertility and Dr Patel can guide you with certain nutrition, supplements and lifestyle plans to help with these.
Tests and Referrals
Some specialised tests are able to give very useful information on your nutrition status, hormonal status and on the genetic aspects on becoming pregnant and these can be discuss these further with Dr Patel. There are some tests that can be arranged by your GP, so Dr Patel can contact them about this.
Dr Patel works with several highly experienced and trusted medical colleagues who she can refer couples to for further investigations, or fertility treatments, as needed. There are also other practitioners who can support you, including fertility acupuncture specialists.
How Dr Patel can work with you?
To begin with, Dr Patel will arrange a short phone call with you to find out more information and so she can better understand your needs to give you the correct advice. She will send out detailed health questionnaires before the consultation, and a Food Diary to complete. Dr Patel will then arrange to see you an initial consultation, at our therapy room within the Wellness Centre, preferably as a couple, for an in-depth discussion and assessment. She will then work with you for around 12 weeks and during this time she will be in touch as you may have questions and need extra support along the way. Prenatal and postnatal nutritional support
Dr Patel also offers specialissed consultations for pregnancy nutrition, to optimise the health of the mother and support development of the baby. Many pregnacny symptoms can also be reduced or supported with natural dietary and supplement otpions. Postnatal support is also incredible important, to nourish the mother help recover from the pregnancy and birthing process, as well as ensure the best start for the newborn. Dr Patel can advise on all aspects of postnatal care and nutrition for both the new mother and her baby.
