Education, Health, and Care Plan (EHCP) Support Consultations

Chiswick, West London

An ‘EHCP’ stands for Education, Health and Care Plan and is for children and young people aged up to 25 who need more support than is available through special educational needs support.
An EHC Plan is a legally binding document identifying educational, health and social needs and sets out additional support to meet those needs. If a Local Authority deems your application to be successful, you may be able to receive a personal budget for your child to help them access support needed.

Our consultant Rebecca can support families along their journey in applying for their child’s EHC Plan and can offer guidance in relation to the full process, including the writing and submission of their application.

About Rebecca

We have many families coming to us for therapy and assessments who are applying for an EHC Plan and we appreciate how stressful this can be. Our wonderful consultant Rebecca has worked with children and families for over 40 years, as a social worker, teacher, headteacher and now a counsellor for children and adolescents. Rebecca currently works within one of The Children’s Wellness Centre partner schools providing therapy sessions for children.

Her extensive experience of working with additional needs has given her insight into the additional provision children may require and how to best achieve that support. As a headteacher, her school was recognised as having excellent provision for children with highly complex presentations. Rebecca was a member of the Local Authority Complex Needs Panel where decisions about children and young people with Special Educational Needs are made, giving her a good understanding the requirements for a successful EHC Plan.

Requesting an EHC assessment

You can ask your local authority to carry out an assessment if you think your child needs an EHC plan. A young person can request an assessment themselves if they’re aged 16 to 25. A request can also be made by anyone else who thinks an assessment may be necessary, including doctors, health visitors, teachers, parents and family friends.

If they decide to carry out an assessment you may be asked for:
• Any reports from your child’s school, nursery or childminder
• Doctors’ assessments of your child
• A letter from you about your child’s needs

The local authority will tell you within 16 weeks whether an EHC plan is going to be made for your child.
It can be a daunting process gathering evidence and working towards an EHC Plan for your child and sometimes a little guidance and further explanation about the process can help families feel more at ease and confident in submitting their application.

Rebecca can support with:

– Guidance about the whole EHC Plan process from start to finish

– Guidance about working with schools to achieve the best outcome for your child

– Guidance to write and submit EHC Plans using appropriate terminology as needed

How does it work?

Our sessions are run via Zoom, usually in the evenings once children have gone to bed, so that parents can speak freely.
Consultations last one hour and prior to your first meeting we will ask you to fill in a short form so that Rebecca has some background information with regards to your goals and where you are in the process. This means the session itself can focus more on helpful guidance, rather spending the time going through too much background information.

You can book as few, or as many consultation sessions as you require. Some families may only want one session to ask a few questions and gain some clarity, others may like more regular support as they work their way through the full process.
