Special Needs Support
Tunbridge Wells, Kent
We understand that parenting a child with SEN can be very challenging. Our in-house Special Needs Consultant works with parents and carers who may need additional support to manage their child’s special needs and/or associated behaviours.
We provide a 3-session programme to help families implement positive changes in the home environment in order to support the child individually and assist the family as a whole.
Common challenges
The below list is not exhaustive, but support can be offered if you are experiencing difficulties with any of the following:
- Managing routines such as getting ready in the morning or going to bed
- Behaviour management at home or out in the community
- Aggressive or physical behaviours, emotional outbursts, or meltdowns
- SEN related anxiety or concerns around sleep, eating, or personal hygiene
- Keeping yourself or your child safe
- Difficult life events including separation, bereavement, or family breakdown
- Access to SEN respite services, such as short breaks or mentoring schemes
- Managing family wellbeing, including support for siblings
How the programme works
We provide a 3-session programme to help families make positive changes to support their child and strive to maintain a harmonious home life. Sessions are run in-person from one of our private Therapy rooms, although if attending a face-to-face session is difficult, sessions can be provided online via video conferencing.
Session one: Getting to know your child’s needs (60-minutes)
Our consultant will meet with you without your child present for an initial session to get to know your family. Each child with SEN has their own unique profile, so it is important to understand a little bit more about your child before support strategies can be offered. What works for one child, may not work for another. During the first session, you will be guided to share your child’s strengths, as well as any concerns you may have. There may be lots of changes you want to make in your family life, and this session provides an opportunity to discuss these in more detail.
Session two: Tailored support plan (60-minutes)
During the second session, you will be supported to implement practical strategies, including ways to alter the environment if necessary. This may include the use of resources such as visuals or charts, which will be emailed or posted to you. You will leave with a plan to put in place and our consultant will ensure you feel happy and comfortable with any next steps.
Session three: Follow up (60-minutes)
After the second session, (usually two or three weeks later) our consultant will meet with you to discuss the effects of any changes that you have been able to implement. She will support you with amending ideas that may need adjusting, as well as discussing how any positive changes can be maintained long term.
For families wanting further sessions, these can then be booked as one-off sessions, either on a regular basis, or on an ad-hoc, needs-be basis.
